Mirror work has been popularized by Louise Hay. It is a powerful tool you can use to reconnect with yourself as well as see how you really feel about the person staring back at you. This isn't about looking at your physical body and admiring yourself on the outside. It is about going below the surface to see how you feel about what lies beneath.

Mirror work is simple and requires very little time. All you need is a mirror and an open heart and mind. If you want to give it a try you can start with the following:
1. Stand or sit in front of a mirror and look directly in to your eyes and say, “I love you.”. You can repeat it a few times and add your name. You want to wait and see what comes up as you gaze into your eyes. Some people cry, some people have trouble looking into their own eyes, some people laugh and feel uncomfortable. Resist focusing on how you look or your physical body. Stay with your gaze and tap in to how you feel.
2. Start with 1-2 minutes and see how that goes. You can try other statements such as “I love and appreciate you (insert name)” or “I completely accept you (insert name). The key is to always look directly in to your own eyes and to focus on what comes up for you emotionally. If thoughts pop up you want to pay attention to them as well but try and stay with your emotions.
3. Your reaction may surprise you and that is ok. It’s just information for you to work with. Be honest with yourself about what you experience. Go ahead and fall in love with the incredible person you see in the mirror- wonderfully unique you.

Journaling is another way to check in with ourselves and see what is really going on with ourselves. It can be easier to write without filtering the information and sometimes people are surprised what comes out when they don’t monitor themselves and just let it flow. You can ask yourself questions such as: Am I happy? Does my job/ school/ relationship align with who I am and who I want to be? What is my dream for this year? I am I following my dream? You can just open to a blank page and write about whatever comes to mind. You can visualize your heart chakra and take a few deep breaths and after a long exhale or sigh, open your eyes and see what wisdom your heart has to share.
In general, it is helpful to ground yourself before you begin to write. Shake out any excess energy if needed and take some deep breaths. Create a sacred space to write in. You can do this by clearing any clutter, lighting a candle or incense, putting on music, using a diffuser with aromatherapy oils. Anything that signals to you that this is a special time. You can also go outside and write in nature (under a tree, on the beach, sitting on a park bench, any place that works for you). Enjoy the process.
